U11 West House v KES
One of the highlights of the cricketing calendar at West House School is the much anticipated fixture against the U12 King Edward’s School A team squad. For the boys, this is the pinnacle of their cricketing journey at the school and they always rise to the challenge, without doubt or fear. This year, West House took to the field in the 1st Innings and a credible bowling performance combined with some superb fielding including, not one, but TWO unbelievable run outs from Jacob saw KES reach 86-7 off the full 20 overs – a score which we knew was not going to be easy to chase down but optimism shone through the faces of the boys during a fantastic tea at KES!
In reply, it was former West House Head Boy, Roman D, who opened the bowling for the opposition and proved difficult to put away chipping away at the West House top order. Thomas and Arjun provided some stability in the middle order but regular wickets meant that West House fell just short of the total and lost what was an incredibly eye-catching fixture. At West House, we always discuss the ‘spirit of cricket’ and how important it is to not just enjoy playing the sport, but also play in the correct manner with your team and respect your opponents – to play hard but play fair! We could not be prouder of the boys for rising up to the challenge of this fixture and playing the sport with the upmost respect and, regardless of the result, truly representing the, ‘spirit of cricket’ and the close bond that exists between West House and King Edward’s School. A fantastic effort boys and a massive well done!
U11 West House v Hallfield
The U11 A-D Teams played four matches against Hallfield this week on a lovely Wednesday summer afternoon! A dominant performance from the A Team saw West House win the toss and bowl Hallfield out for just 29 before a comfortable chase which saw the boys finish on 29-1 and secure a 9-wicket victory. Ali-Aoun was a fine captain and controlled the match from start to finish with the whole team demonstrating the spirit of cricket in a small run chase. Top effort boys!
Arunveer helped guide the B Team to another convincing win with his power hitting capabilities and a strong bowling performance from the C Team saw regular wickets fall for Hallfield, with Yusuf bowling a wicket maiden and Lucas getting 2 wickets in one over! Both teams winning by comfortable margins.
However, the drama unfolded in the D team fixture which went down to the final ball of the game. With West House only 4 runs ahead, captain Rayan needed to survive the final ball of the match to secure a narrow victory knowing that if he got out, then there would be a -5 penalty and the result would be reversed! With the ball on target to hit the stumps, Rayan got bat on ball and played an exquisite front foot defence which made it four out of four wins for West House! A brilliant effort from all the U11 teams!
U8 West House v Hallfield
Thursday provided an outstanding afternoon of soft ball cricket as the U8 A-D teams had their first chance to showcase their cricketing progress this term against Hallfield School. For the A Team, West House batted first and really focused on their running between the wickets and rotation of strike. Oliver and Aadam were crucial in guiding the team to a credible 271 from 16 overs after a strong final partnership. With the ball in hand, Joe was the pick of bowlers conceding only two runs from his two overs and picking up a wicket. Zak provided some dazzling pace in support and West House restricted the opposition to 250 and secure a 21-run victory!
Ameer stared in the B team as he hit an incredible boundary in the final over to guide the team over the line and win by two runs! It was noted how all the boys bowled with a straight arm and showed plenty of energy in the field! Captain Luke and his C team delivered a fine performance as they defeated Hallfield by 24 runs. A special mention goes to Moiz for his accurate bowling, always trying to target the stumps and make the batter play every ball. An all round team performance from the D Team saw them go on to win their match by 17 runs and ensure the clean sweep for the U8s against Hallfield School. A great learning experience for the boys so well done to all involved!
