The U9 squad have been training hard for the past few weeks and were looking forward to putting their hard work to the test against Ruckleigh. Have won the toss, Eshaan G selected to bowl first. It was Omar M and Ali D who opened the bowling spell. Both bowled well with Omar exhibiting a fine selection of well-pitched, straight balls certainly leading by example.

Mr Lloyd said Monty A could bowl next so he took the ball but the first two balls weren’t as great as the last four were! Eshaan G the captain, had inflicted the damage with the ball. Ali D got a wicket or in fact two and possibly got a run out. Esa A bowled very well and Ruckleigh finished on 236 runs.

Now it all came down to the batting and Mr Lloyd chose the first pair as Ari N and Arunveer G got 10 runs and Ari got 6 – well done to the two of them! The next pair was Omar and Jacob S. It was great play by Omar and his mighty partner.  The 3rd pair was Monty along with Ali. The first ball was no ball but the second was going leg side and Monty sensed a gap and cheekily smashed it through. There was lovely play by Ali who played defensively but smashed it at the end.

The 4th pair was the captain, Eshaan G and Esa A.  Gupta played delightfully and Esa  played class. Lastly, in came Ali D and Thomas G. Ali smashed in into one of the Ruckleigh player’s hands but thankfully he dropped it and that was a very dangerous shot to play. Thomas kept playing defensively but was the last over he played his shots and at the end of the match the West House parents were applauding and cheering loudly for the team. Ruckleigh scored 236 but West House scored 282 and went home with a comfortable win.

Cricket is one of West House’s strongest sports – especially in the older years. We have some great coaches like Mr Lloyd and Mr Sajjad who coach us lots of useful things and tips for playing crickets. They have lots and lots and lots of experience.

A couple of us thought that Ruckleigh school would be very difficult, one of the hardest matches of the season. The rest thought it would be easy. It was a team A game and we played great. Mr Sajjad was our coach and told us that we should bat if we won the toss. We lost but the other team wanted to bowl anyway.

We had a smashing start with Kyle I and Rishi S who opened the batting. Kyle cruised his way to 25 in 20 balls and you had to retire at 25 so he finsihed his innings with style hitting 2 back to back sixes on the short boundary.

Rishi S and Ali D had a good partnership until Ali was bowled out with a low-bouncing ball. Soon Martin J came and played steadily to get another retirement. Rishi was also sitting in the pavilion as he too was retired.

To be honest, I think the main reason we won was because of how exceptional our fielding and bowling was. Everyone had a turn to bowl and it seemed like we were getting regular wickets.

Our fielding required reflexes and a stunner from me that I didn’t even know I could do. I dived full stretch to my left and just when I thought I had dropped it, I held tight and their county batsman walked angrily off.

They ended on a total of 69 runs and we had a very impressive win.
