A Celebration of Reading and Poetry at West House
There has been a distinctly literary feel around West House this week as we celebrated National Poetry Day and continued to develop our love of reading.
The boys enjoyed a special assembly celebrating the poetry created by our Year 6 pupils. We also shared poetry recommendations before working together to create a whole-school poem.
This year’s National Poetry Day theme was ‘Wonder’, providing plenty of inspiration for the boys to explore poetry for themselves. Pupils are encouraged to bring in poems they particularly enjoy and share them with their class as part of their enrichment projects.
Our newly established school library has also been proving a popular destination. Boys have been making the most of the opportunity to pop in during Tuesday lunchtimes and Thursday breaktimes to browse the shelves, swap books, chat about their latest reads and ask friends and teachers for recommendations.
Every year group also has a dedicated library session each week. These sessions include book discussions, opportunities to choose new books and shared reading of class novels.
It has been particularly lovely to see the boys beginning to recommend books to one another. Developing a genuine love of reading is about so much more than simply completing a book – it is about discovering stories, ideas and authors that stay with you.
We hope the library will become a much-loved part of life at West House and, most importantly, that it encourages plenty of boys to discover their next great read.
