Learning Alsatian!

This term, the Year 5 U Talk Club took on a truly impressive challenge: learning Alsatian, a rare and regional language spoken in the Alsace region of northeastern France. Alsatian is a Germanic language with strong influences from French, and it is considered endangered, with relatively few speakers today. That makes it all the more special — and difficult — to learn!

The club worked hard to get to grips with the unique sounds and vocabulary of Alsatian, preparing to take part in a nationwide U Talk competition designed to test their language skills.

Three determined boys represented the school in the competition, going head-to-head with other young linguists from across the country. Although they didn’t win, they gave it their all and did West House proud with their enthusiasm, effort, and commitment to mastering such an unusual and complex language.

We’re incredibly proud of their achievement — not many people can say they’ve spoken Alsatian, let alone competed in it!
