Musical Youth
Music lies at the very heart and soul of West House. It is part of our DNA. Last week was a perfect example of this as 300 pupils took part in musical perfomances to their fellow pupils.
Junior Inter-House Music Competition
Mr Lawrence and Mrs Butler had put together a fabulous programme for Years 3 and 4. The afternoon started with a lively recorder ensemble featuring all of the boys. The solos then followed thick and fast , with a few duets thrown in for good measure and all boys performed with confidence and maturity. This was extremely impressive as many boys have only recently taken up an instrument. The range of instruments on show was also encouraging and bodes well for the future of the orchestra. There were saxophones, cellos, trumpets, clarinets, violins, pianos, french horns, drums, electric and acoustic guitars and of course voices.
The afternoon concluded with a beautiful performance of Land of the Silver Birch, with each house taking a verse to showcase their vocal dexterity.
Mr Monks from King Edward School and our own Mrs White had the unenviable task of awarding points for each performance. It was extremely close but the winner this year were the Trojans.
Pre-School, Reception, Year 1 & 2 Music Assembly
The sun was shining and there was a definite “springy” feeling in Duce Hall as we were all entertained by the younger pupils in the school. They sang, they danced and they played glockenspiels with gusto. Their joy was infections and the whole school went about the day with big smiles on our faces and a spring in our step.
Senior Inter-House Music
The week ended with the Senior competition. Dr Leigh took time out from his busy KES schedule to come and adjudicate and was extremely impressed with the quality of the musicians.
The school orchestra opened with three versions of The Magnificent Seven performed by each house. The Spartans managed a full score of 25 for their version!
Musicians played pianos, french horns, flutes, bassoons, drums, saxophones and even a cornet.
The concert finished with all boys in fine vocal form as they sang All that glitters. A fabulous way to finish the afternoon.
It was extremely close but it was the Persians who were the ultimate winners. All boys should be proud of their efforts.
