The teaching of verbal and non-verbal reasoning techniques forms a key aspect of delivering a broad and balanced curriculum. From Year 3, pupils benefit from timetabled VR and Non-VR lessons which increase in number as boys move into Years 4 and 5.
The aim of such teaching is to contribute to the development of an understanding of the application of language, as well as skills of logic and deduction, in a range of contexts. In achieving this aim, close links are firmly established with the teaching of maths and English in particular.
The understanding and application of skills is monitored through regular assessment tests, taken under examination conditions.
As boys move into Year 5 they are invited to attend two additional after-school classes each week in preparation for 11+ entrance examinations. Further classes are organised during the summer holiday period and to complement this preparation, pupils in Year 5 are given access to a range of resources via the school website.
