Year 6 Get On Their Bikes!

On Monday 28th February, 24 boys from Year 6 got on their bikes to learn the basics of cycling safety. The 4 day course included learning how to check and maintain their bikes before embarking upon cycling, first on the playground and then, later in the week, on the roads around school. On the first day the boys learnt basic cycle control skills including starting and pedalling, stopping, manoeuvring, signalling and using the gears.
By the third day it was time for the boys to be let loose on the neighbouring roads. They now engaged in the real cycling experience, including dealing with traffic on short journeys under the watchful gaze of their instructors, Darren and John. Many of the boys found the challenges of indicating and manoeuvring when turning right particularly difficult, but grew in confidence as they gained experience.
This very worthwhile course taught the boys some valuable life skills and resulted in 17 boys achieving their Level One and 6 boys achieving Level Two. Ajaipal Bhatti commented, “It helped me to build my confidence and ability to ride safely on the roads. I would thoroughly recommend it to others.”
