SCIENCE MID TERM PLANNING
Year 3 SUMMER Week 1 Week 2 Week 3 Week 4 Week 5
Main Topic 3B Helping Plants to Grow Well
Lesson Topic Virtual Greengrocers The Structure of Plants The Root as a Special Organ Greenhouse Investigation Keeping Plants in the Dark
Aims To establish that fruit and vegetables are all plants that we eat To show that a plant is a living organism and that each part does a different job To establish the important of the roots of a plant To establish the advantages of growing plants in a greenhouse To show the importance of healthy plants
Learning Objectives To appreciate the different parts of the plan which we eat and don’t eat and to identify and name the various parts To recognise the different roles that each plant part plays To understand that the roots carry water to the rest of the plant through the veins in the stem To appreciate the advantages of light, warmth, air and water in the growing of healthy plants Plants will always grow towards the light.  Without light the plan will become yellow, thin and spindly
Resources Paper and modelling materials, pupil book page 10-11 Plants, pupil book page 11, Pupil Master Sheet 3B 1 Bulbs and holders, celery, rulers Radish seeds, pots, compost, water, bottles, syringes, thermometers, rulers, PMS 3B 2, pupil book page 11+14 Beans, cardboard boxes, strips of card, tape, pupil book page 12-13
Delivery Pupils name as many fruits and vegetables as they can.  Pupils draw & annotate/make models of fruits/veg.  For display.  Pupils make bar charts to show which parts are eaten Discussion comparing functions of body parts to functions of plant parts.  Pupils measure relationship between number of leaves and health of plant Use display from week 1, list plants whose roots we eat.  Devise experiment to measure how much water the roots take in a week.  Observe what happens to celery when put in dyed water for ½ hour Teacher shows seeds & establishes aims.  Pupils plan investigation, each group changing 1 variable.  Pupils decide how to measure progress & do so over next 2 weeks Pupils describe plants which have been kept in the dark.  Make a maze for a bean plant in a cardboard box which one hole in the top.  Pupils observe over next week how plant grows towards the light

SCIENCE MID TERM PLANNING
Year 3 SUMMER Week 6 Week 7 Week 8 Week 9 Week 10
Main Topic 3D Rocks and Soils
Lesson Topic Rocks and Natural Materials Examining Rocks Comparing Hardness & Permeability of Looking at Types of Soil Comparing the Permeability
Aims To establish the different between naturally occurring rock and manufactured ‘rock’ To make accurate observations of various rocks To understand the terms permeable and non-permeable To know that soil is made up of small fragments of rock To understand the words permeable & porous
Learning Objectives To understand that if a material has only been shaped or polished it is classified as naturally occurring and if it has been made from a number of ingredients it is manufactured To understand the terms ‘crystal’ and ‘later’ and to appreciate how they are formed To know that permeable means water can soak in and non-permeable means it can’t To investigate the properties of different soils To carry out an investigation to measure how permeable or porous the soil is
Resources Samples of rocks, natural materials, manufactured materials, PMS 3D 1, pupil book page 26-27 Various rocks labelled A, B, C…, hand lenses, PMS 3D 2, pupil book page 28 Rock samples, sandpaper, pipettes, hand lenses Soil samples, hand lenses, clear beakers, pupil book page 30-31 Soil samples, funnels, measuring jars, timers, pupil sheet 3D 3
Delivery Pupils look at samples.  Discussion on natural/man made.  Pupils dig to find rocks & soil in school grounds Discussion of what to look for.  Pupils look closely at rocks & identify using PMS 3D 2.  Observational drawings Pupils set task to choose a rock for a gravestone; needs to be waterproof & strong.  Look at samples, sort & predict.  Test rocks Discussion on erosion.  Observe soil types & discuss importance of air and humus.  Survey school grounds for soil types Discussion of rainfall on soil.  Experiment to measure how quickly water drains through soil
