Who lived in Britain before the Romans  
Pupils can demonstrate a basic factual knowledge and understanding of early settlers, in this case the Celts.
 
Ask pupils what they know about Ancient Britain and steer them towards the period before the Roman invasion. Ask them what they think life would have been like at the time.

Explain that before the Romans, Britain was occupied by various Celtic tribes. Discuss various aspects of Celtic life, including the fact that the Celts themselves were early settlers.

Pupils appreciate the geographical context of Rome and have some understanding of the pattern of its growth.
 
Introduce the idea that Rome was a small village/town that grew into a mighty empire.

Pupils look at a map and familiarise themselves with the extent of the Roman Empire at its height within the context of the Mediterranean region.

Who was Boudicca  and what happened in A.D. 60 ?  
Produce a description of Boudicca that draws on more than one source of information.

Suggest one or more reason for the revolt.
Show the pupils images of Boudicca. Ask them to describe what they see, drawing their attention to the differences in how she is portrayed.

Ask the pupils to draw a picture of Boudicca and write a short description of what they think she was really like.

Read the story The Rebellion of Boudicca and answer questions.

Pupils organise and arrange events of the Roman invasion and subsequent settlement, including the revolt.

What were the short-term and long-term results of Boudicca’s revolt?  
Suggest consequences of Boudicca’s revolt.
Select information to show how a Roman or a Celt would have perceived the revolt.
Discuss with the pupils the immediate consequences of the revolt for the Celts and the Romans and record these on the whiteboard. Also discuss the longer-term impact of the revolt on Britain.

Ask the pupils to think about how a Celtic or Roman survivor of the revolt might feel. Provide them with suitable sentence starters and ask them to write about the results of the revolt from the point of view of either a Celt or a Roman. Discuss why people might view the revolt differently.
