Plants and Animals – Unit 2B

Level 1: Can sort sets of pictures into 2 groups – animals and plants. Can recognise some simple differences between the animals that lives in their local environment. Can identify some animals and plants that live in the local area. Level 2: As above plus,can identify two types of habitat. Can record the numbers of mini-beasts found. Level 3: Can make suggestions as to why certain animals are found in different environments. Can predict where mini-beasts can be found. |
Week 1: Ch. Draw an animal and plant. Discuss what they know. Revise Autumn term – Variation. Discuss what animals live in the school grounds. Walk out and look at the habitats which have been created to encourage creatures to ‘move in’. Draw habitats seen and label for file. Week2: Discuss animals’ needs. Show leaflets from pet shop and information books about caring for animals. Create own booklet about caring for an animal. Use I.C.T. and complete some work at home. Week 3: Life cycle of a plant. Draw information diagram and label. Week 4: Life cycle of a frog and butterfly. Draw information diagram and label. Week 4: Pond dipping trip – botanical gardens? Or own pond. Identify and record how many of each insect/animal and plant we can identify. Record in a graph. Week 5: Ch. Working in groups,using hoops, identify the insects and different types of plants that can be found in the grass over the area. Draw and number to record. Make a graph to show findings. Week 6: End of half term assessment test, Rising Stars. |

Level 1:Know that without food and water, humans would fall ill and die. Recognise some common medicines we take when we are ill. Level 2: Identify and name three food types and say which can be eaten freely and which should be eaten as treats. Recognise the dangers of taking medicines without being supervised by an adult. Level 3: Describe what is meant by a balanced diet and explain that exercises is also needed. Describe some safety features on medicine bottles and the dangers of taking medicines indiscriminately. |
Week 1: Group foods into sets according to different criteria. Recap, healthy eating plate. Discuss how all living things need nutrients and that we get ours from food. Week2: Watch blue dragon, ‘building bodies’ Discuss sugar in food. Look at food labels and identify labels – healthy and unhealthy food. Recap brushing teeth after eating sugar. Week 3 Discuss medicines and look at boxes and bottles for medicines. Look at safety tops and features. Look at leaflets inside medicines. Look at 3 bags of powder – sugar, flour and washing powder. Disuss how we can identify them. Design a safety poster about the dangers of medicines. Week 4 Discuss keeping clean. Washing clothes and our bodies. Learn practically how to wash our hands correctly. All have a go. Write instruction poster to put up in Loos. Week 5: Discuss exercise and how it is necessary to be healthy. Carry out fair test. Different exercises for same amount of time. Look at heart rates. Make a chart and show in a graph. Week 6: Assessment Tests. Rising Stars, end of year papers. |
