Year 2 Design & Technology Curriculum (Spring)


Mechanisms

6 x 80minute lessons   Cross-Curricular: Art, ICT, English
Learning Outcomes Teaching Ideas and Learning Context ICT/Whiteboard Resources
Level 1:Will be able to identify types of vehicles.
Level 2: Will be able to identify different parts of a vehicle, wheel, chassis and axels.
Level 3Create a plan/design from which to create a 3D model.
Level 4  Follow the plan to create the model.
Week 1:Look at different types of vehicles.  Identify parts – wheels, axels and chassis.
Week 2:  Design own vehicle and collect junk to make it with.  Discuss with teacher what it will look like when assembled.
Week 3:  Make vehicle from junk, following plan.
Week 4:  Complete design of vehicle with paint/logo’s, etc.
Week 5:   Evaluate vehicle against original plans and suggest improvements. Suggest how vehicle could be made to move. (Linking with science – push and pulls).
Week 6: See which vehicle runs furthest down slope.  Fair test. Multimodal texts, p6 Forces.
