Religious Education
Religious Education is taught throughout Keys Stages 1 and 2. The Programme of Study is designed to provide an awareness of differing beliefs, as well as an understanding of connections between them. It also presents a forum for discussion and debate on key issues of today, making pupils not only more socially aware, but encouraging them to start forming their own opinions on the world around them.
From Years 1 upwards, pupils look at different places of worship, symbols and their meanings, key religious figures, different creation stories, religious stories, key issues and why faith is important.
In Years 5 and 6 a variety of issues are addressed, such as human rights. Older pupils are also encouraged to discuss and appreciate the similarities and differences that exist within the rich variety of races and cultures that exist in today’s world. This is not only extremely interesting, but empowers pupils to make their own decisions, preparing them for what is going on in the world around them - In effect, shaping responsible citizens of the future.
As is the case with history, when considering key issues, pupils learn that there are often at least two arguments, without there necessarily being a definitive right or wrong answer. Therefore, they are actively encouraged to think carefully about their opinions and justify their thoughts.
Religious Education links in well with English, ICT, Citizenship, PSHE, History, Geography and Numeracy. Confidence, awareness and responsibility are key attributes fostered in the Religious Education Curriculum.
