Maths
Mathematics is taught to all pupils throughout the school as an integral part of the curriculum.
The aims of the department are:
- to give each pupil a solid mathematical foundation on which to build.
- to help the pupils be confident in mental computation.
- to teach the pupils to apply mathematical skills to other areas of the curriculum and in everyday situations.
In the Pre-prep department pupils are timetabled a daily 1 hour lesson, in the Prep department pupils receive 6 x 40 minutes a week.
The school bases its mathematics scheme on the National Numeracy Strategy but also prepares pupils for external mathematics examinations they will take to enter secondary education.
A variety of published Mathematics schemes are used, including secondary school books for some Y5 and Y6 pupils. The pupils engage in mental, written and practical exercises to reinforce concepts being taught. All classrooms are equipped with an Interactive Whiteboard and the Department uses a combination of traditional teaching methods as well as interactive teaching methods. Pupils are also given the opportunity to work on computers when a topic lends itself to this learning opportunity.
To ensure all pupils develop their full potential they are taught in ability sets throughout the school. These sets are flexible and are continually reviewed so that each pupil is offered appropriate support for their needs.
The school prides itself on some outstanding mathematics results. Many pupils are working at a mathematical level significantly higher than their chronological age. Some Year 5 and 6 pupils participate in the annual Mathematical Association's Primary Mathematics Challenge and several pupils have been placed in the top 5% of this national competition. Results in external examinations are consistently high.
