Games and PE

The facilities at West House School include 5 acres of games fields, along with a modern sportshall, two tennis courts, and three cricket nets.
 
Throughout their time at the school all pupils are encouraged to participate in and enjoy a variety of team games and to develop their individual skills within the context of a team.
 
In Years 1 and 2 games is taught alongside dance and gymnastics. The boys are introduced to athletics, football, striking and fielding games, as well as swimming.
 
In Years 3 – 6 boys are introduced to a number of additional team games with cricket, rugby union and football being the main activities. Athletics, basketball, swimming, badminton and tennis are also extremely popular options.
 
Swimming lessons take place at the University of Birmingham Munrow Sports Centre, under the direction of specialist coaches. All pupils work from The National Plan for Teaching Swimming (NPTS) towards the Aquatic Awards Scheme (ASA).
 
The school places significant emphasis upon healthy competition and runs teams in all major sports from Year 3. Initially, these are in the form of small – sided games, but as boys grow in stature and confidence they graduate to full – sided scenarios.
 
Over many years, the school has built up a fine reputation and is noted for its success in local, regional and national fixtures and competitions. The school enjoys strong links with Harborne Cricket Club, West Bromwich Dartmouth Cricket Club, Moseley Rugby Club and Edgbaston Priory Tennis Club. Boys in Years 1 and 2 benefit from specialist coaching provided by The Aston Villa Youth and Community Scheme.
 
House competitions are amongst the highlights of the school year, along with a swimming gala in which all pupils are encouraged to take part.
 
A number of boys are selected to play at club, district and county level in a variety of sports.
