French

French is introduced in Year 2 and is studied through to Year 6. The subject is taught by a specialist languages teacher.

In Year 2 lessons are predominantly orally based and boys become familiar with the language through rhymes, games and songs. However, they are gradually introduced to written French and start working on key grammar and vocabulary using a lively and accessible textbook.

In the Prep Department (Years 3 – 6), pupils are encouraged to develop their French in four skill areas – reading, writing, speaking and listening. This is addressed largely through topic based work, with boys in Years 5 and 6 working with increasing independence. Grammar continues to be a feature of the course and is taught at a level commensurate with the age and ability of the pupils.

The department also aims to develop an awareness of French culture and in order to experience this first hand, boys in Years 5 and 6 have the opportunity to take part in a biannual residential trip to France. Boys in Years 3 and 4 take part in a French Breakfast at which they sample the delights of ‘Le Petit Déjeuner Français.’
