Reception

At West House School the Reception classes provide a happy and stimulating environment for boys between the ages of four and five. The majority of our boys transfer from pre-school and therefore already feel very much at home in the main school.

The Reception class builds on existing knowledge and experience in all areas of the curriculum. Great emphasis is placed on literacy and numeracy which takes up a majority of the morning sessions. Reading is a high priority and the boys read individually most days as well as taking a book home to read with their parents.

Each term children in Reception follow a topic which gives them the opportunity to explore their knowledge and understanding of the world. The boys enjoy a wide variety of scientific and creative activities which take them out into the school grounds and the surrounding area as well as on trips to the theatre, a farm and other exciting venues.

There are excellent resources for sport and music with time allocated in the sports hall three times per week. Play is an important aspect of the learning process and the children are given plenty of opportunities for developing their social skills.

Our aim is to encourage each child to achieve their full potential by treating them as individuals. The Reception children enjoy school and feel valued and secure in homely and supportive surroundings. Reception classes generally number 10 - 12 pupils each therefore allows for a significant degree of teacher input at such an important stage of the educational journey.
