Prep (Years 3-6)

Throughout Prep (Years 3 - 6), boys benefit from teaching by well-qualified and experienced subject specialists. While Maths, English and Science enjoy a significant time-allocation other curriculum subjects remain priorities of the school.

As with English, pupils are set for Maths according to ability. Further differentiarion within these groups allows each pupil to work towards challenging but realistic targets at an appropriate pace. The school follows one major scheme for Maths and English allowing for continuity from Reception onwards. However, while these are supplemented by a number of other textbooks, there is a firm belief that teachers should be allowed the freedom to teach and inspire without unnecessary constraints. Pupils are assessed on a regular basis and the results used to identify targets for future development.

Great importance is attached to the teaching of humanities along with sport, music and art. A busy timetable of activities in each of these areas is backed up by 'options' sessions and a variety of after-school clubs. These allow those with particular gifts and talents to develop their learning within the mainstream.

A feature of West House School is its dedication to the pastoral care of pupils. In Key Stage 2, pupils are allocated a form tutor who is responsible for addressing their day to day needs. PSHE topics are led by the Headmaster, which undoubtedly contributes to the School's fine reputation for having a unique, caring and family atmosphere.
